LITOCLEAN achieves full recovery of the land in the port area of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The project of the Capitanía Marítima area – Ligrasa esplanade, in charge of CEPSA, is solved with a resounding success.

In the port area of Capitanía Marítima-Ligrasa in Santa Cruz de Tenerife there has been a soil remediation project in place since 2006 by the company CEPSA. The cause of the contamination was hydrocarbon leaks in the pipelines that connect the refinery with the product storage tanks, which run parallel to the coastline.

After the first actions of product extraction, CEPSA decided to incorporate LITOCLEAN to the project to give an effect in the elimination of the free phase. The new management of the project by LITOCLEAN meant an extension of the characterization of the area with new boreholes and the planning of a new suction extraction system.

This exhaustive work meant that last year practically all the existing free phase had been eliminated, leaving only remaining product in some of the piezometers.

In order to eliminate the free phase remaining in the subsoil, in recent months various actions have been carried out consisting of selective excavation and separation of the soil, washing of contaminated soil and extraction of the product and subsequent treatment of the recovered water. This method has been chosen as the most effective for the typology of the land in question, which has also avoided its transfer to a controlled landfill, as the excavated soils have been returned to the plot itself once they have been cleaned.

With these last actions, in addition to those being carried out in some wells in areas adjacent to the esplanade, the scarce presence of product that has been recorded will be completely eliminated.

This is an ambitious project that has been a resounding success thanks to the in-depth knowledge and dedication of LITOCLEAN’s team of professionals. Once completed, this esplanade reclaimed from the sea will be free of subsoil contamination and the projects planned to convert it into a recreational area of tourist attraction can be developed.
