Conference organized by Litoclean. Santiago de Compostela, February 22nd

With the title “Prevention and Integral Control of Contamination: Soil and Groundwater”, the event was supported by official entities of Galicia.

The conference had the collaboration of the Department of Environment of the Xunta de Galicia, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment and the Repsol Company, having a great reception until full capacity, reaching more than 80 representatives from different industrial sectors, who felt very interested in the challenge of prevention and integrated control of soil and groundwater contamination.

The conference was opened by Carlos Calzadilla Bouzón, Deputy Director General of Environmental Assessment of the Xunta de Galicia and Begoña Mundó, CEO of Litoclean. Then, the Head of the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Service of the Xunta de Galicia, María Diéguez Gómez, explained the regulations applicable to contaminated soils in Galicia based on decree 60/2009.

Following on from the previous presentation, Marta González Méndez, Litoclean’s Northern Zone Manager, presented the methodology for subsurface investigation and the quantitative risk analysisShe gave details for the responsible evaluation of the potential contamination.

Antonio Callaba de Roa, technical advisor to the Subdirectorate General of Waste and drafter of the state regulations on contaminated soils, focused his presentation on the work carried out in the field of contaminated soils in Spain to date and the aspects in which the regulations will be improved in the near future.

Finally, Francisco Pérez, risk management technician at Repsol, concluded the round of presentations with an interesting explanation of pollution prevention management, detailing the different computerized support tools and the associated environmental actions.

The day ended with an interesting round table discussion in which attendees were able to address the speakers with different questions regarding applicable legislation and details of subsoil investigations and risk analysis.

Carlos Calzadilla, who thanked Litoclean for the initiative and highlighted the interest of this type of technical conferences, which disseminate legislation and science on a topic as important today for the industrial sector as is the prevention and management of soil and groundwater contamination.
