The documents are intended to serve as a best practice manual for soil and groundwater professionals.
The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development has approved three technical guides on contaminated soils, one dealing with the classification of potentially contaminated soils according to risk, another on soil investigation and a third on risk assessment for human health in contaminated areas.
These guides are intended to serve as a vademecum both for the entities that carry out soil investigation and remediation works and for the administrations that have competences in this field. The objective is to promote the best practices of all the agents involved in this field.
The first of the guides establishes the criteria for classifying potentially contaminated soils, which are based on the score given by a computer tool (assessment engine) according to the risk of affecting the soil. This score is calculated on the basis of the information provided by the persons or companies that carry out the potentially polluting activity.
In the second one, the phases of soil investigation are detailed, from sampling, piezometer installation, sample conservation, equipment control, analytical tests, etc. to the evaluation of the conformity of the results with the regulations in force.
The third and last section contains the lines to be followed to assess the risk to human health and ecosystems of a contaminated land, from the initial approach, through the calculation formulas to the interpretation of results or the final uncertainty analysis.
