The company solved this challenge by means of a chemical oxidation treatment using biobatteries.
Accidental leaks or spills of hydrocarbons and other harmful components sometimes occur as a result of activity at industrial chemical and petrochemical facilities. These incidents affect the soil and associated groundwater. Soils contaminated by oil or its derivatives present one of the most complicated challenges for remediation specialists.

LITOCLEAN was recently able to successfully remediate contamination at an industrial ethylene manufacturing facility. After a thorough examination, it was determined that the plant had five sites with an unacceptable risk of contamination over an area of 8,500 m2. The company specialized in soil remediation proposed to remediate the degraded plots by applying a chemical oxidation treatment using biopiles.
The process consists of excavating the area to be treated, extracting the affected soil by piling it up and then applying a chemical product based on oxidizing agents to lower the concentrations of contaminants to acceptable levels. “One of the advantages of this method is that it is cheaper than other remediation treatments, it is fast, and it is easily applied and controlled,” explains LITOCLEAN Project Manager Carles García. In this case, thanks to having found the best solution, the company’s technicians were able to repair the land in ten months.
The TEMA LITOCLEAN Group has a long history working in soil investigation and decontamination projects and as an environmental and safety consultant.
