Hydrocarbon leakage in a residential environment

Action:
Soil and groundwater remediation.

Location:
Spain

Customer:
Confidential

Methods:
Bioremediation, pump and treat.

Products:
Gasoline and diesel.
TPH, LNAPL

Background information

Plot of 7000 m2 of land reclaimed from the sea with 4000 m3 of soils affected by hydrocarbons.
Groundwater at 2.5 m depth strongly impacted, presence of free phase.

Objective and limitations

Disposal from phase free and compliance objectives remediation required by the administration, avoiding mobilize condition a plot adjacent at framework temporary delimited to 12 months. Limitation from space at plot and of existence of point of spill at collector from waters treated.

Methodology applied

Selective excavation and biopile treatment.
Pumping and water treatment and infiltration.
Hydraulic barrier to prevent plume movement to the adjacent plot.

Stages:
  1. Biobattery treatability tests
  2. Excavation and preparation of land for biopiles
  3. Pilot tests in situ for adjustment of nutrients, water and pH of biopiles
  4. Pumping, treatment and infiltration of groundwater
  5. Hydraulic barrier by waterproofing
  6. Soil replacement guaranteeing mechanical conditions according to the use of the plot.
